Our verdict: One of the best bras we’ve worn this year.

Opting to road-test a brand new piece of kit during a half marathon on the hottest day of the year was a risky move, but in this instance, the risk paid off. Like many other female runners, I often suffer with runner’s boob and finish my long runs with pain in my breasts or under my armpits due to ill-fitting or overused sports bras. Experts recommend you change your running bra after 30-40 washes, but like finding the perfect pair of running shoes, finding a comfortable sports bra can be difficult.

At first glance, Lululemon’s Run Times bra isn’t cheap. It’s definitely an investment piece of kit, but one that has been carefully designed by the brand in their research and design lab. It comes in my regular bra size, which I like - I often struggle to convert 32C into a XS, S or M based on different brand’s guidelines. It’s high support, so I know it’s built for running and the bra has padded, adjustable straps, which allows me to tighten them for full support. You can also cross the straps on the back, if you feel you need the additional support.

The bra fits well and doesn’t budge or chafe as I clock up the miles. Lululemon’s ‘four-way stretch’ fabric allowed me to move freely and unlike other compression bras on the market, I didn’t feel like my movement was constricted in any way. I’ve tested a lot of bras that claim to be ‘sweat-wicking’, but this one really was, thanks to the perforated panelling on the front of the bra. On the hottest day of the year, at no point did I feel the bra was uncomfortably wet.

It’s a running joke on the RW team that you haven’t known fear until you’ve been stuck in a sports bra at the end of the long run. There’s nothing worse than that post-run wiggle trying to remove a sweaty sports bra. With the Run Times bra, the hook and eye fastening keeps things simple.

I’m not alone in my appreciation, one breastfeeding runner wrote, ‘I usually wear a 34DD but I've gone up multiple sizes since breastfeeding and now I'm weening so my size is going down again. I ordered this bra in 34E and just ordered a second one because I'm so happy with it. It is comfortable, secure, and doesn't hurt my shoulders or back. It is very supportive and doesn't let my chest bounce. I wear it when I run, bike, practice yoga, and lounge about.’

When it comes to the downsides, I agree that this bra does make me look a little ‘frumpier’ than some of the compressive bras I’ve trained in previously. Yet like any marathon runner will tell you, you don’t care what you look like in the final miles of a race. If you cross the finish line without painful chafing or your kit digging in, it’s a winner in my eyes. Plus, who looks good in race photos anyway?
