We tried the new McDonald's menu and key ingredient was 'missing'
McDonald's recently added a number of items to its menu and we decided to try the latest additions to see if they live up to the hype. The fast food outlet introduced the BBQ Ranch Stack burger, Katsu Wrap and Milky Way McFlurry to the menu this January, for a limited time only.
The BBQ Ranch Stack consists of two beef patties topped with cheese 'made with Emmental', plus lettuce, bacon, crispy onions, creamy ranch and sweet BBQ sauce, all nestled inside a glazed sesame seed bun. The Katsu Wrap, which is available grilled or crispy, consists of chicken breast, katsu sauce, crispy onions, cucumber and lettuce in a toasted tortilla wrap. And the limited edition Milky Way McFlurry consists of the classic McFlurry ice cream base, swirled with milk chocolate stars and malt flavoured pieces, topped with a chocolate sauce.
We ordered one of each from the Lord Street branch of McDonald's, for a total spend of £11.87. Here's what we thought when we tried out the new menu items in the office - sadly only one item scored highly, with one of the dishes feeling like it was actually missing a key ingredient.

BBQ Ranch Stack Burger - £5.69
"I had high hopes for the BBQ Ranch Stack Burger as it looked very filling and full of flavour, however I was underwhelmed. The ratio of meat to sauce was too much and despite the burger appearing to be moist, the meat was very dry and crumbly.
"Most of the flavour came from the barbecue sauce, but there should have been more of it and it overpowered the ranch sauce, which I couldn't taste at all. On paper the bacon, cheese and crispy onions should have worked well together, but in reality I found none of the components particularly flavoursome or memorable."
Score: 2/5
"The limited edition BBQ Ranch Stack has all the makings of a classic double burger with a tasty twist. Two beef patties, bacon, crispy onions and classy Emmental sandwiched in a sesame seed bun with creamy ranch and sweet BBQ sauce. It should work. It should be sensational. Instead it is somehow dry and a little bit disappointing.
"There was a distinct lack of crunch from the onions, the cheese felt like it had come straight out of the fridge and my patties were crumbly rather than juicy and firm. Of course it may have been a rogue Ranch but I won’t be campaigning to keep it on the menu. The flavours were fine but the textures a definite let-down."

Katsu Wrap - £4.59
"The chicken in the McDonald’s katsu wrap was impressively crispy and tender. Unfortunately, the experience was let down by a serious lack of onions and katsu sauce. As a result, it mostly felt like eating a plain chicken, lettuce, and cucumber wrap - hardly what you’d expect from McDonald’s.
"The small amount of katsu sauce present had a decent kick to it, but it missed the characteristic sweetness you’d typically expect from ingredients like honey and brown sugar. I was hoping this could be a worthy alternative to the sweet chilli chicken wrap, which I love, but sadly, the katsu chicken wrap doesn’t make the cut."

Milky Way McFlurry (mini size) - £1.87
"As soon as I read that McDonald's were launching a Milky Way McFlurry I was already excited to try it. Fortunately, it turned out to be the delicious miniature treat that I'd hoped for. The McFlurry had the usual soft vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce, milk chocolate stars and malt flavoured pieces.
As you'd expect, it tasted just like a Milky Way, which was probably strengthened by its generous ratio of topping to ice cream. My only criticism was I'd rather have had proper pieces of chocolate than the thin stars, but I guess that wouldn't be keeping with the theme."
