I tried Patisserie House in Hull city centre - and it's tastier than your average meal deal
Sandwiched between the much bigger units of Furley & Co. and Bar 82 is one of Hull's newest bakeries.
Patisserie House opened in early July opposite Princes Quay. The independent bakery has the likes of breads, chocolate and pastries made fresh daily at its home in Princes Dock Street.
Despite having being open for while now, I was totally unaware of its existence. Its smaller unit between the quayside bars gives it an almost hidden-in-plain-sight feel but, once you've spotted it, you won't forget it. Inside is a sole L-shaped counter counter and shelf, telling me that this is more of an eat-on-the-go spot.

From walking into the building, you first see the plentiful array of freshly-baked desserts behind the counter. Meanwhile, a mixture of hot and cold sandwiches signposted by the menu - the chicken, cheese and chorizo sounded a bit me.
While the sarnie I ordered was in the oven, I got to chat to the charming baker behind the counter while I was the only person in the shop. On the shelf behind me, I noticed some lovely-looking bread rolls and croissants, which I just had to pick up while my brew finished. The butty, brew, and croissant came to £9.30 in total (Croissant £1.80, iced coffee (with vanilla) £4, sandwich £3.50).
Even before I unwrapped the still-warm sandwich at my desk, someone in the office exclaimed "Ooooh, that smells good" - always a good sign! The first thing that jumped out was the soft, fresh bread. Toasted to perfection.
Sometimes I feel that some sandwich places could be a tad more generous with the filling, but there was plenty of chicken and the taste of the chorizo went hand in hand with the poultry - topped off by glorious melted cheese. A solid 8/10, and well priced too.
Not my usual go-to, the croissant was one of the best I've ever had. In the past, I often find them dry, too flaky and a bit boring but this one was, like the bread, insanely soft - and didn't leave a mess like other pastries rather astonishingly.
While it might be a little easy to miss this place, its definitely worth popping in to take out a sarnie - on its own it's less than a Tesco Meal Deal now after a recent price increase, and definitely tastier and fresher.
Patisserie House is open Monday-Thursday 7am-6pm, Friday 7am-7pm, Saturday 7am- 8pm and Sunday 10am-5pm.
