Trump’s AG Failure Matt Gaetz in Talks for Surprise Job Under Dem Megadonor
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), President-elect Donald Trump’s self-combusting nominee for attorney general, may have found himself a second job after backing out of the running for the nation’s top law enforcement job.
In addition to his new gig as a host on right-wing network One America News beginning in January, Gaetz is in talks to join the law firm of bigwig Democratic donor John Morgan, both men told Politico.
Morgan, who is registered as unaffiliated in Florida, has long supported leading Democrats; he was former President Bill Clinton’s finance chairman in the state and gave to former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
He told Politico that his firm Morgan & Morgan, known for personal injury and class action suits, hires “finders, minders and grinders” and Gaetz could be a “finder-minder.”
Gaetz told the outlet the two have “talked about collaborating professionally.”
Morgan was a key financier of Florida ballot initiatives that legalized medical marijuana and hiked the state’s minimum wage. He also joined a bipartisan effort with Gaetz and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2019 when the three urged state legislators to lift a ban on smokeable medical marijuana.
Morgan’s firm was suing the state over the issue and the pro-marijuana Gaetz brokered the truce between the Dem megadonor and his state’s highest-ranking Republican.
In addition to his stance on marijuana, Morgan lauded Gaetz’s willingness to criticize the property insurance industry and processed foods, telling Politico: “A lot of the things that my politics are, Matt Gaetz’s are.”
The terms of Gaetz’s second potential job since he quit his House seat last month are pending the details of his new TV job.
He left elected politics after withdrawing from his proposed nomination to be Trump’s attorney general, which prompted a Senate after a litany of ethics allegations.
Gaetz had quit the House shortly before the Ethics Committee was set to meet about a probe into allegations he had sex with a 17-year-old and took illegal drugs.
Gaetz denied the allegations, and a Department of Justice investigation led to no charges being filed.
