Yahoo News Trump condemns Johnny Depp's "sad" assassination joke
Johnny Depp's joke about the assassination of US president Donald Trump is not going over well with the White House.
A strange turn event took place as Depp was introducing a specially-curated selection of films at the Cineramageddon at Glastonbury on Friday, as the actor suddenly launched into an anti-Trump rant.
"Can you bring Trump here?" he asked, and then responded to the jeering crowd by wondering: "You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?
"I want to clarify, I'm not an actor. I lie for a living [but] it's been a while. Maybe it's about time."
As you can imagine, the Trump White House was none too pleased with Depp's joke and took the time on Friday to formally condemn the actor.
"President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it's sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead," the White House statement read.
"I hope that some of Mr. Depp's colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official."
A condemnation from the White House might be the least pf Depp's trouble. The US Secret Service confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that it "is aware of the comments in question".
"For security reasons, we cannot discuss specifically nor in general terms the means and methods of how we perform our protective responsibilities," a spokesman for the agency added.
