Trump mocks 'low IQ' Joe Biden for gaffe teasing 2020 presidential run

Donald Trump called former Vice President Joe Biden "another low IQ individual" on Twitter after the 76-year-old presidential candidate stumbled over some words during a speaking engagement last week.

While delivering a keynote speech at a Saturday dinner for the Delaware Democratic Party, Mr Biden claimed he had "the most progressive record of anybody running."

He quickly corrected himself, saying "anybody who would run — I didn't mean it. Anybody who would run." However, cheers from the crowd drowned out Mr Biden's correction.

Although the former Vice President has not yet made an official announcement declaring his candidacy for the 2020 presidential candidate, the verbal slip hints he will be throwing his hat in the ring for the White House bid.

The verbal slip prompted Mr Trump to attack the Delaware Democrat on Twitter.

"Joe Biden got tongue tied over the weekend when he was unable to properly deliver a very simple line about his decision to run for President," the president tweeted on Monday morning. "Get used to it, another low I.Q. individual!"

The president's insulting jab at Mr Biden is not the first. Hours before his State of the Union speech last month, Mr Trump reportedly dismissed the former vice president as "stupid" and "dumb."

“I hope it’s Biden,” Mr Trump said, referring to who he hopes to challenge in the general election. “Biden was never very smart. He was a terrible student. His gaffes are unbelievable. When I say something that you might think is a gaffe, it’s on purpose; it’s not a gaffe. When Biden says something dumb, it’s because he’s dumb.”

Although Mr Trump mocked his likely Democratic challenger for his latest gaffe, the president himself has a long record of highly publicised blunders.

The most recent includes referring to Apple CEO Tim Cook as "Tim Apple" during a board meeting at the White House.
