Donald Trump is being mocked for declaring on Twitter that his approval rating is sitting pretty at 51 per cent by citing a poll from Zogby, a company once branded the “worst pollster in the world”.

A more reliable survey from NBC/The Wall Street Journal has meanwhile found that 46 per cent of voters disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy and that 68 per cent of Hispanic voters and 72 per cent of white women with college degrees disapprove of his performance in the Oval Office, revealing just how reliant he remains on his hard-line base for support.

The administration continues to insist the US economy is in rude health and not dipping towards recession but privately discussed abandoning the high tariffs deployed in his trade war with China to ease the pressure, according to The New York Times.
