Trump racist tweets: Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel respond to president's xenophobic attacks

Late-night hosts have responded to Donald Trump's racist tweets in which he attacked four Congresswomen of colour, claiming they ought to "go back" to "the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came".

Mr Trump later insisted that the tweets were not, in fact, racist, adding that he doesn't "have a racist bone in [his] body".

That particular line resonated with Trevor Noah, who said on his Daily Show Tuesday night: "Everyone always says 'I don't have a racist bone in my body', but how do we know racism is in the bones?

"Maybe it's in the spleen. We don't know. It could be anywhere."

Noah also pointed to a paradox in Mr Trump's repeated statements that those who "hate" the United States can leave and the message of his 2016 presidential campaign, which pointed to many of America's alleged failings.

"His entire message was, 'America's failing, this country's not what it used to be, China's beating us.' Instead of complaining, why didn't he just leave?" asked Noah.

Stephen Colbert, too, addressed the president's tweets in a segment titled "Racism Is Donald Trump's Brand".

“You have said a lot of racist things," said Colbert to Mr Trump.

He added: "You demanded the execution of the Central Park Five, who were innocent. You said Barack Obama was from Kenya. You wanted to ban all Muslims. You said Mexican were murderers. Racism is your brand.”

Jimmy Kimmel also offered his take on the president's racist tweets, musing: "Without Twitter, we would just have to wonder if our president had racist thoughts on every subject, but now we can read those thoughts every day."
