Trump at UN: US may have to ‘totally destroy North Korea’

US president Donald Trump today (September 19) made his first speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during the general debate, where world leaders present their priorities to the international stage. Trump, who has previously called the UN “a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time”, covered subjects including North Korea, terrorism and migration. Concerning North Korea, he referred to leader Kim Jong-un as “rocket man”, a term he has previously used on Twitter. He continued that the country’s ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests threaten ‘the entire world with unthinkable cost of human life”. Going on to say that the US may have no choice but to “totally destroy North Korea”. Watch the full speech here Trump also singled out Iran and criticised the 2015 nuclear deal, negotiated by ex-US president Barack Obama, an “embarrassment” to America. As his speech touched upon the subject of terrorism, the US president said the US was working with allies in the Middle East to “crush” terrorists. He also thanked Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon for receiving refugees. On the subject of Venezuela, Trump called the situation there “completely unacceptable” and said that the US couldn’t stand by and watch. He closed by saying: “God bless you, God bless the nations of the world, and God bless the United States of America.” The morning session will also see French President Emmanuel Macron make his UNGA debut, amongst speakers from other countries.
