I try gorgeous Greek gyros at new Hull takeaway offering £1.99 Black Friday deal
A new Greek takeaway in Hull prides itself on sourcing only the best ingredients, with authentic feta cheese, meats, and flatbreads imported from Greece.
The Greek in Newland Avenue has been open just one week and is already proving popular with students and local residents. When I visited the takeaway before the evening rush, there was already a customer ahead of me in the queue and an UberEats driver picking up a collection.
A special Black Friday deal will have gyros on offer for £1.99 from 12pm on Friday, November 29. I couldn't resist a preview of this tasty saving and ordered halloumi gyros - other gyros options are pork, chicken, and a mix of the two.

There are also vegan menu choices such as falafel and hummus instead of yoghurt. My gyros was a warm flatbread stuffed with giant fried halloumi cheese, tzatziki, fries, and a feathery green herb I think may have been dill.
On the side, I had a gigantic Greek salad with red and green peppers, fresh tomatoes, red onion, olives, and the biggest slabs of feta cheese I have ever seen. The gyros was one of the most satisfying experiences with street food I've ever had.
It felt like nourishing, hearty food while being a bit naughty at the same time. The fries were as crisp and golden as the halloumi cheese and the herby yoghurt balanced out the richness perfectly, making for a more sophisticated meal than I anticipated.
The feta cheese in the Greek salad had a much stronger flavour than I was accustomed to, but this made it all the more delicious. I can't imagine my taste buds going back to the bland supermarket alternative now they've sampled the real deal.
I also loved the olives. They are not pitted, so you must spit out the stones, but I adored how rich and fresh this made them taste compared to the sad salty ones I've had from jars.
On the side, I had a bottled Greek soft drink called Loux Lemon. It contained 7% lemon juice and had a refreshing sweet-sour taste without being too acidic.
Petros Nikitakis, the owner of The Greek, said the first week had gone well and students had been taking advantage of the 10% student discount. "A lot of students have never tried Greek food so we want to introduce the flavours to them," he said.
He added: "The aim is to offer quality food and great customer service. I've had a lot of positive feedback."
