A trespasser at a busy east London station has caused huge disruption on four major Tube lines.

The District, Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines all ground to a halt on Thursday evening, sparking travel chaos.

The problems were caused by a trespasser at Aldgate East station, TfL said.

Video footage posted on social media showed two women emerging from the tunnel at the station earlier in the evening.

As a result there was no service between between Tower Hill and West Ham on the District line; Moorgate and Edgware Road via Embankment on the Circle line; Moorgate and Barking on the Hammersmith and City line; and Moorgate and Aldgate on the Metropolitan line.

Severe delays were later reported on all four lines.

Commuters on the District and Circle lines were particularly furious, after a faulty train at Earl's Court caused significant travel problems on Wednesday evening.

One said on Twitter: "Second night in a row the @districtline is up the creek. @TfL you are really a waste of money!"

Another said: “Literally the 2nd day in a row the @districtline has been a nightmare. At least I’m on a train, but it’s stopped in tunnels and been held at almost EVERY station.”

Another added: “For the amount us commuters pay, the service we receive is completely unacceptable. There always seems to one issue or another.”

Tfl said tickets would be accepted on local buses, South West Trains, Greater Anglia, C2C and Chiltern Railways.
