Tube strike: London commuters take to Twitter to share travel chaos

As thousands were delayed in the Wednesday morning rush hour, many took to social media to vent their frustration

Passengers suffered travel chaos today after a strike on London Underground caused gridlock on roads in the capital as well as massive disruption on Tubes and buses.

As commuters found themselves delayed or stranded, many took to social media to vent their frustration or simply document the rush-hour chaos. The 48-hour strike is estimated to cost the London economy £50million.

Despite London Underground’s insistence it was operating trains on eight out of 11 lines, hundreds captured the chaotic scenes as huge crowds swelled around affected stations.

Some tweeted about the apparent confusion in information, as many arrived at Tube stations they thought would be open, only to find them shut.

Other commuters on bikes raged at the number of ‘casual cyclists’ who took to the roads on ‘Boris Bikes’ on Wednesday morning, making cycling more difficult.

Overall, journeys into London on network rail services took twice as long as normal because of packed stations and passengers trying to cram on to already overcrowded trains at rush-hour.

At some stations travellers had to queue to get on to escalators before even reaching platforms, while at Clapham Junction, the country's busiest railway station, one passenger headbutted another after failing to get on a busy train.

Long queues formed at bus stops, despite an extra 100 buses being put into service, as people attempted to make their way into work amid the stoppage.
