TV cameras rolled into the 'Hollywood of the North' as filming got underway for a new BBC comedy - with one of the stars of the show spotted in Victoria Square.

An area of Hotel Street in Bolton was transformed into a bank and a corner of Victoria Square was taken over by trucks as cast and crew worked on Undoing Martin Parker on Monday (January 30).

Set in the 1990s, Undoing Martin Parker tracks the titular character, played by Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill, who is a self-made man with a chain of electrical stores to his name.

It tracks his downfall at the hands of those who he has in his rise to success, such as Diane (Rosie Cavaliero), Dougie (George Costigan), Kath (Sian Gibson) and Gladys (Sheila Reid).

Hill, Cavaliero – of Gentleman Jack and Worzel Gummidge fame – and Gibson – of Car Share and League of Gentleman fame – were all seen in the town centre this week to film scenes for the new BBC comedy.

Car Share star, Gibson, a co-creator and co-writer of the show alongside Paul Coleman, said: "Luckily, my fashion sense hasn’t changed since 1990, so it’s a dream to be reliving my youth and dusting off my crimpers with this amazing cast and wonderful team."

Coleman, whose own credits include Car Share and Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere, said: "I'm thrilled to be writing this series and working with such a wonderfully talented cast, who are all helping us shine a much-needed light on the themes of family feuds, revenge and top-loading VCRs."

And Jon Petrie, the BBC's Director of Comedy, added: "Sian and Paul have created an irresistible gang of comedy characters and a world packed with joyful nostalgia. The quality of their writing is matched by a fantastic cast and we’re incredibly excited to introduce Martin Parker and bring this lovable rogue to BBC audiences next year."

Bolton is no stranger to TV cameras and is seen by some as the 'Hollywood of the North' after it appeared in series such as Happy Valley.

Although set in West Yorkshire, the series starring Sarah Lancashire came to the town centre and used locations such as Amico Cafe and Market Place shopping centre for scenes screened earlier this month.
