A new documentary is set to lift the lid on a "cruel and senseless" double murder that sent shockwaves through Essex. Discovery+ is set to cover the fentanyl murderer Luke D'Wit's killing of Stephen and Carol Baxter on Mersea Island in a new series releasing this week.

D'Wit killed the Baxters using fentanyl after posing as a doctor and creating a fake Will to ensure he benefitted financially from their deaths. The 34-year-old of Churchfields, Mersea Island was found guilty by a jury earlier this year of the double murder in April 2023.

The killer wormed his way into the wealthy couple's lives, becoming their friends and got close to their daughter Ellie Baxter. He would create multiple different personas to contact and befriend the family, including a doctor and also a woman claiming to be setting up a talent competition.

Additionally, D'Wit was the person who took over Ellie Baxter's 999 call to the ambulance service when they found her parents unresponsive in their conservatory. D'Wit had administered fatal doses of fentanyl to the couple's drinks in the same weekend, and would later watch them die via CCTV that was installed in their home.

Discovery+'s new series, titled "999 Murderer Calling", will be available to watch on the streaming platform from Friday (November 15). The first episode will go over D'Wit's conversations with the emergency services, the investigations into the couple's cause of death, and the subsequent arrest and trial of D'Wit. which took place at Chelmsford Crown Court in the spring of this year.

The episode, which EssexLive has been involved in producing, covers D'Wit's actions in the lead up to the Baxters' deaths, voicenotes where he had posed as a woman called "Jenny" he had been messaging Carol Baxter as, and the level of control he wanted over their lives, and after their deaths, the successful business they ran.

D'Wit was jailed earlier this year for a minimum of 37 years as part of a life sentence for the double murder. To this day, he maintains his innocence and has not shown any remorse, nor shared any possible motive for why he wanted to kill the couple. However, the judge in the case, Mr Justice Nicholas Lavender, believed D'Wit enjoyed the control he exerted over their lives.

Speaking in the documentary, EssexLive's Chief Reporter Ellis Whitehouse, who covered D'Wit's trial and sentencing, said: "He fully believed D'Witt enjoyed the amount of control he had. He enjoyed, essentially, bossing people around, he enjoyed the manipulation. He knew he had them entirely within his grip. He realised that he had the ultimate control. Then he realised what he could do with that control, and that was to end these lives at his own will."

999 Murderer Calling is available to watch on Discovery+ from Friday, November 15.
