TV shows and movies filmed in Northern Ireland to get excited for in 2025

2024 marked another massive year for Northern Ireland's booming TV and film industry.

Global film stars, gripping TV series and even some Oscar nominations have once again brought Northern Ireland into the homes of people across the globe through huge blockbusters and unmissable shows filmed here.

There were plenty of film crews spotted over the last year in various locations around the country as a whole host of exciting projects are expected to come to our screens in 2025.

Here are a number of films and TV series filmed in NI last year that we can hope to see on our screens very soon:

How To Train Your Dragon

Coming to cinemas in June 2025, this live-action remake of the DreamWorks popular animation filmed in NI from January to May last year.

Gerard Butler reprises his role as Chief Stoick in the blockbuster which was filmed in Titanic Studios, Harbour Studios and on location on NI's north coast.

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup stands apart.

The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon.

Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.

Funboys

Funboys is a four-part BBC show about three emotionally-unassembled young men in small-town Northern Ireland produced by BAFTA-award-winning producer of This Country Simon Mayhew-Archer.

Commissioned after its successful launch as a comedy short film in 2023, the series will air on BBC NI, BBC Three, BBC One and BBC iPlayer in February.

Funboys sees friends Callum (Ryan Dylan) , Jordan (Rian Lennon) and Lorcan (Lee R James) attempt to navigate through the hardships of life.

From first girlfriends to dead pet pigs, the lads are put through the psychological ringer. But will their shared love of innocent fun and wholesome mucking about land them in hot water?

A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms

Shot between June and September 2024, it would only be fitting for the newest instalment in the world of Games of Thrones to return to shoot in Northern Ireland.

Named one of the "most anticipated new shows of 2025" by IMBD, it is expected to air in the later half of the year.

Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s novella “The Hedge Knight,” the first season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” will follow the exploits of the knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg roughly 100 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and 100 years after the events of “House of the Dragon.”

Ser Duncan the Tall, an Egg, wandered through Westeros while the Targaryen dynasty ruled the Iron Throne, and dragons were still remembered. Great destinies and enemies await the incomparable friends.

Trespasses

Although no release date has been announced for the TV adaptation of Co Down author Louise Kennedy's novel Trespasses, NI Screen has said the show is in post-production.

With filming wrapping up in December, it is hoped that the four-part series starring The Fall actress Gillian Anderson will land on our screen this year.

Trespasses is a forbidden love story set against the backdrop of the Troubles.

Whilst working one night behind the bar of her family pub, serving a mixed crowd including the locally stationed soldiers, Catholic schoolteacher Cushla meets Michael, an older Protestant married man, who often defends IRA suspects and is friends with cultured Bohemians who enrage and intrigue Cushla.

Worlds apart, Cushla knows a relationship like this spells all kinds of trouble, but they are irresistibly drawn to one another.

Art Detectives

Art Detectives is a new original crime show centred around the Heritage Crime Unit, a police department consisting of art-loving DI Mick Palmer and straight-talking DC Shazia Malik.

Together, they solve murders connected to the world of art and antiques, from Old Master paintings to Banksy street art, medieval manuscripts and collectable vinyl.

"Throughout the season, the artfully astute detectives encounter a fake Vermeer, Viking gold, a rare Chinese vase and items rescued from the Titanic.

Mick navigates these demanding cases while managing a budding romance with museum curator Rosa and the sudden reappearance of his charismatic father, Ron who just happens to be one of Britain’s most notorious forgers.

No release date has been released but it is said to be coming out in 2025.

Everyone's favourite Derry girl is back with an exciting new series with Netflix.

How To Get To Heaven From Belfast is the newest creation from Lisa McGee, the writer and creator of the acclaimed Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls.

Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse, glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn, and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school.

Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever, these three friends are about to embark on the most thrilling adventure of their lives.

When an email arrives, telling them about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang, Greta, a series of eerie events at her wake set them on a dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth of the past.

With filming completed at the end of 2024, fingers crossed we will be seeing the comedy-thriller at some stage in 2025.

Saipan

Expected to get "a major theatrical release" in the summer of 2025, Steve Coogan stars as Mick McCarthy and Éanna Hardwicke stars as Roy Keane in the film about the events leading up to Ireland’s 2002 World Cup campaign.

Filmed around Belfast last summer, it was produced by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville for Wild Atlantic Pictures along with Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler for Fine Point Films.

Ireland’s captain Roy Keane was dramatically sent home from the 2002 World Cup – when the team was preparing in Saipan – following a public quarrel with manager Mick McCarthy.

The incident divided public opinion in Ireland about who was to blame.

Hunting The Cybersex Crime Gang

James Blake is back for a new documentary following on from his 2024 film 'Hunting The Catfish Crime Gang' which followed the Lisburn man who had his identity stolen on social media and used in scams going on an international journey to uncover the gangs fighting to get his identity back.

This time, he goes on the frontline with a special global task-force in the Philippines during a series of raids aimed at smashing this online crime. But as James discovers, the perpetrators and funders of much of this modern day crime are often back in the UK.

It is set to air on our screens this Spring.
