TWA Hotel will feature a stylish infinity pool overlooking JFK airport

For anyone who has ever sat at a crowded airport and dreamed of a more relaxing atmosphere, your travel fantasies are about to become a reality. In New York, at least, where the Gerber Group is planning to open The Pool Bar and Observation Deck at the TWA Hotel, right outside John F Kennedy Airport.

The original TWA Flight Center was an iconic building renowned for its cutting-edge 1960s design, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now the building is coming back to life as a major hotel. The restoration has been privately funded and is estimated to cost $265 million.

The TWA Hotel was originally scheduled to open in 2018 but is just now opening its doors, in time to sip a cocktail this summer - just don't accidentally have too many cocktails and spontaneously jump on a flight (the hotel is linked to the airport through a 'flight tube' so it would definitely be easy to do.)

The buzzy airport hotel, with 512 guest rooms and a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, isn’t anything like the usual Holiday Inn experience. It features The Sunken Lounge, a chic, retro bar that throws back to the day where air travel was far more elegant than the usual sweatsuits and pajama pants - more Mad Men than athleisure-clad influencer.

The pool itself will be worth heading towards the airport - even if it means getting stuck in the typical JFK traffic jam. The rooftop deck will feature a 63 x 20 foot infinity pool inspired by the very Instagrammable one at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, complete with underwater seating.

In winter the pool will turn into a pool-cuzzi, hitting temperatures of up to 100 degrees. And to avoid contamination from aeroplanes flying over, the filtered water will be purified every 30 minutes.

Of course, if you don’t feel like taking a dip while waiting for a flight, you could just grab a cocktail. Choose from a list including the Mile High Spritz, made with St. Germain and Prosecco, or the Watermelon Collins, fittingly served with Aviation gin.

It's already aiming to be a celebrity hot spot, and not just with the regular paparazzi aiming to capture A-listers leaving the airport with their shades on. Louis Vuitton is hosting its resort show at the hotel on May 8, forcing Manhattan fashion editors to venture to Queens.

The location is opening on May 15, so you can finally look forward to flying into JFK.
