The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz has reflected on his experience directing an episode of the show that earned him a legion of fans.

Cudlitz portrayed the no-bullshit and charismatic Abraham Ford on AMC's zombie hit for three years (between 2014 and 2017) before memorably having his skull caved in by Negan.

But as he moves behind the camera for the ninth season's seventh episode, how has he found it going back to the apocalypse?

Describing it as "the best of both worlds", the actor/director recently got chatting to The Wrap.

"First, I was welcomed back so lovingly and taken care of by the crew and the cast," he explained.

"Everybody was just rooting for my success and when you enter in that way, you are already in a position to succeed. The great thing about directing the cast was that the cast is changing now, so I had a wonderful experience about being [able] to direct, basically half of my cast was brand new and the rest were people that I have longstanding, amazing relationships with.

"So to be able to work with the people that I've worked with before in an acting capacity, you know, and to help guide them in telling these stories and to be able to work with people that I not only respect but admire as performers, and have never worked with before, to be able to work with those guys was really great."

Cudlitz had to juggle a number of new aspects on the show, notably implementing the series' first ever deaf performer.

"We had a lot, a lot of elements of the show that are new elements: animals, kids, American Sign Language. A lot, a lot of elements" he elaborated.

Meanwhile, we've been wondering if these plot teasers can help us decipher the timing of Rick Grimes' exit.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US, and on FOX and NOW TV in the UK.
