After nearly 30 years David Lynch’s enigmatic drama is returning to screens, so here’s everything you need to know about the show – past and present.

What’s it about?

Originally airing in 1990, Twin Peaks failed to transform its rave reviews into sustainable viewing figures and was cancelled after plotlines in the second series went astray.

In the intervening 27 years the show’s originality and ambitious style has garnered a cult following, influenced countless other TV hits and become a cultural reference point. And now it’s returning to screens.

The series followed the investigations of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper and was created by legendary director, producer and writer David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man) and Mark Frost

Funnily enough the show’s first run concluded with an intriguing promise that a reunion would occur 25 years later and give or take a year and a feature film – it has.

The first series’ followed Cooper’s investigation into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.

Before long it’s discovered she’s been living a double life involving prostitution and drugs. The murder was solved in the second series of the show but Cooper remained in Twin Peaks to investigate further.

The new series takes us to just about the present day – 25 years later, in continuation with the plot, where Cooper, possessed by evil spirit Bob, is reunited with Palmer who has haunted him for a quarter of a century.

What is Twin Peaks?

Twin Peaks is the fictional US town where drama is set. In the pilot episode Cooper states that the town is “five miles south of the Canadian border and twelve miles west of the state line”, which would place it in the Salmo-Priest Wildnerness.

Where is it filmed?

The original series was filmed in various locations in America including Snoqualmie near Seattle and Malibu in California.

Who is in the cast?

Most of the original cast will be returning, including Kyle MacLachlan as Cooper, David Duchovny as Denise Bryson, Sherilyn Fenn as Audrey Horne and Sheryl Lee as Palmer.

New faces joining the cast include Amanda Seyfried, Monica Belluci, Tim Roth, Ashley Judd, Matthew Lillard and Naomi Watts.

What’s with all the coffee and the cherry pie?

The original series frequently saw Cooper indulging in his favourite sweet treat, a cherry pie, accompanied by ‘a damn good cup of coffee’, black naturally.

When is it on?

Episodes one and two of the new series aired on Monday morning at 2am on Sky Atlantic but you can catch them again on the channel on Tuesday May 23 at 9pm.

How can I watch it?

If you’re a Sky viewer you can watch the series on Sky Atlantic, but if you don’t have Sky, you can stream it on subscription service Now TV.
