Donald Trump is receiving the wrath of many on Twitter today, after he made a comment aimed at women, telling them he'll make sure he gets their "husbands back to work". The sentiment of the president's words might have had you believing you'd time-hopped back to the 1950s for a moment, but no, we're still here in the disaster that is 2020.

Trump made his thoughtless pledge during a campaign rally in Michigan, one week to the day before US citizens go to the polls to elect their next leader. Pitching specifically to women about how he planned to get the country back on its feet after the COVID-19 pandemic, the president said: "You know what else? I’m also getting your husbands ― they wanna get back to work. ... We’re getting your husbands back to work. Everybody wants it." Yup, because it's only men who go out and work in this day and age.

The remark grossly dismisses the fact that in 2019 there were 76,852,000 women aged 16 and over in the United States' labour force, according to non-profit organisation Catalyst, which focusses on building workplaces that work for women.

Over on Twitter, negative responses to the president's archaic words have rolled in thick and fast. He's been described as being "out of touch with reality" and "disconnected from the majority of American people", with one user saying his comments made her "sick."

"Did we hate 2020 so hard we accidentally got thrown back to 1952?" one post read. "Yes little ladies, Trump is getting your husbands back to work so you can go back to sitting around on the couch eating bon bons," another sarcastic jibe added.

One female user pointed out the error of the politician's ways, noting that he "sorely needs the suburban housewife vote" in the upcoming election. "Remember when he pathetically begged them to like him at his rally? Telling them that he’s getting their husbands back to work is *not* the way to win them over," she wrote.

Donald Trump doesn't look to have responded to any of the criticism on Twitter.

With just six days to go before the November 3 election, more than 69.5 million Americans have already voted via post or early in person. The Democratic nominee Joe Biden is currently leading the Republican party's Donald Trump in the polls, but in 2016 Hillary Clinton also led in the polls but Trump still came out victorious. Only a week to wait to find out which way the 2020 will go...
