Two British Men Drown At Malta Beauty Spot

Two British men have drowned while swimming at a beauty spot in Malta, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The pair, both 35, died after getting into difficulties at the Blue Lagoon off Comino - a small island between Malta and Gozo.

Local police said the accident happened at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

An FCO spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Malta on May 23.

"We are providing assistance to their families at this difficult time."

Members of the Maltese military attended the scene in an attempt to assist with the rescue operation.

One man was taken by private boat to the nearby town of Imgarr on Gozo and the other was airlifted to a hospital on the island.

The Birmingham Mail said it believed one of the men is a dentist from the Small Heath area of the city.

The Blue Lagoon is a swimming and sunbathing area, popular with day trippers from resorts on the main island of Malta.

A police investigation into the deaths is believed to be under way.
