Two officers have been rushed to hospital after a police van was sent "flying four metres in the air" in a horror crash with a car in Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to Dalmarnock Road, near to Dalmarnock rail station, after the incident happened at around 5pm on Saturday. Ambulance crews attended and two male officers and the male driver of the car were taken to hospital for treatment. Their condition is currently unknown.

The road was closed for over five hours while police carried out an investigation at the scene and officers say their enquiries are ongoing. Yesterday we told how one bystander described being frightened hearing a loud bang, before turning to see a police van flying into the air and flipping 360 degrees.

In a post on social media, he said: "(It) made me think it was an explosion for the split second that I was lifting up my eyes to look in the direction of the sound.

"To my absolute horror I saw the police car flying four metres in the air turning over 360 degrees and landing on pedestrian crossing fencing and another car that passed below the police car and caused the impact it coming to a stop with airbags inflated."

Images from the scene showed a police van on top of roadside barriers, as described by the eyewitness, with officers standing nearby surveying the debris.

Another showed a black vehicle, which appears to be some sort of sports car, with its roof ripped off. Officers placed a large cordon around the road, stretching as far back as the Emirates Arena in one direction.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report of a crash involving a marked police vehicle and a car on Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow, around 5pm on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

"Emergency services attended and two male officers and the male driver of the car were taken to hospital for treatment.

"Dalmarnock Road was closed and re-opened around 10.30pm. Enquiries are ongoing."
