Two Die After 'Car Travels Wrong Way' On M1

Two people were killed in a crash on the M1 after a car was reported to have travelled the wrong way down the motorway.

A white Ford Transit van and a blue Mazda Premacy were involved in the collision close to junction 24 in Leicestershire at around 2am on Monday.

The 87-year-old driver of the Mazda and a 27-year-old male passenger in the van were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where he remains in a stable condition.

The southbound carriageway between junction 24 and 25 was expected to be closed until Monday evening, while resurfacing work was carried out.

The one lane closure on the northbound carriageway has been lifted and is now fully reopened.

Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

A car was reported to have travelled the wrong way down the southbound carriageway before the crash, Leicestershire Police said.

Anyone who has information about the incident or saw either vehicle prior to the collision, is asked to call DC 1761 Pete Davies on 101.
