Two New Fires Outside Athens Force Evacuations

Two fires, fanned by strong winds, broke out near Athens on Monday, August 16, forcing evacuations.

Footage posted on Facebook shows clouds of smoke rising above Lavrio, about 35 miles south of Athens.

Another wildfire broke out in a pine forest in Vilia, about 30 miles northwest of the Greek capital.

Kathimerini said strong winds were being blamed for fanning the forest fires. No injuries were reported, the news site said.
