Jodie Whittaker is to be Doctor Who's 13th Doctor, the first ever woman to take on the iconic role, and most people are thrilled about that, but for some, the battle of the sexes rages on.

Where are the Daleks when you need them, eh?

Sadly, the latest clash over the Doctor's gender comes from two former Doctors themselves, Colin Baker and Peter Davison. But don't worry, it's not a totally depressing exchange.

As the two actors appeared at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday (July 20), Peter Davison – the fifth Doctor – lamented that a female Doctor may no longer be "a role model for boys".

According to the BBC, when Peter admitted that he "liked the idea" of a male Doctor, Colin Baker (Doctor number six) promptly rubbished his claims. Quite literally.

"They've had 50 years of having a role model," Colin replied. "So sorry, Peter, you're talking rubbish there – absolute rubbish.

"You don't have to be of a gender to be a role model. Can't you be a role model as people?"

Conceding his point a little, Davison mused that perhaps he was just "an old-fashioned dinosaur". If you say so, Peter.

Luckily, Jodie has the support of more Doctors with each day that passes, as David Tennant recently paid tribute to the show's incoming female lead.

While appearing at a panel for Call of Duty: WWII Zombie Mode at Comic-Con, Ten gave a lovely shout-out to his former employer, calling Doctor Who "another show with a strong female lead".

Also vocal in their support for Jodie are Who alumni Peter Capaldi, Alex Kingston and John Barrowman. Oh, and the actual bloody dictionary.

Peter Capaldi's final Doctor Who episode airs this Christmas on BBC One.
