Two in hospital and two arrested in north London shooting

Two people have been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and two more have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police have said, in what is the second shooting near a north London tube station in as many days.

Armed officers were called out after the incident, which happened near Rayners Lane underground station shortly after 5pm on Tuesday. They found two men with gunshot wounds in a nearby garden.

Scotland Yard said a man was “reported to have fired shots at another group of males before fleeing the scene with an accomplice on a moped”. They said neither of the wounded men, who are believed to be 18 and 25 years old, suffered life-threatening injuries. Police were on Tuesday evening still looking for the shooters.

The two arrested men, who have not been named, were taken to a police station in west London, where they were being held on Tuesday evening. Police said they were found with the injured men and were detained “following reports that there had been shots fired in return at the males on the moped”.

Police appealed for information about the two moped riders, who were still at large.

The incident comes a day after three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting near Kingsbury underground station, about four miles to the east. That incident happened shortly after police received reports of shots being fired elsewhere in west London.

Scotland Yard was unable to say at such an early stage whether or not there was any link between the three incidents.

The Rayners Lane shootings are the latest violent incident in a bloody year for London, where more than 90 homicide investigations have been launched since January.
