Two men arrested after 'large explosion' and hit-and-run in Peterhead

Police in Peterhead have arrested two men in connection with a hit-and-run which occurred after a 'large explosion' in a nearby park.

Officers were called to the Aalesund Road area on Tuesday evening at around 9.20pm after receiving reports of a collision between a van and a pedestrian.

A 33-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene, with the driver of the vehicle fleeing the area.

The incident followed the ignition of a large pyrotechnic device, causing damage to an area of grass near a skate park off Meethill Road.

Two men, aged 57 and 62, have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, and police say further enquiries are currently ongoing.

As well, an extra police presence will remain in the area, with the incident being treated as contained and having no wider risk to the public.

Chief Inspector Steven McDonald said: "Around 9.20pm on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 officers were called to reports of a collision involving a van and a pedestrian on Aalesund Road, Peterhead.

"A 33-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene. The driver of the vehicle left the scene.

"Prior to the crash, a large pyrotechnic device was ignited nearby, causing damage to an area of grass close to the skate park.

"Two men, aged 62 and 57, have been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

"The incident is being treated as contained and there is no wider risk to the public. A visible police presence will remain in the area while this work is ongoing."
