Two men have been charged with assaulting an emergency worker while allegedly stealing bicycles belonging to NHS staff.

At least two medics treating patients with coronavirus reported having their bicycles stolen from Queen’s Medical Centre on Thursday.

David Peter Moran, 35, of Courtleet Way, Nottingham and Craig Lancaster, 29, of Camrose Close, Nottingham have been arrested in connection with the incidents.

Both men have been charged with five counts of burglary, theft and assaulting an emergency worker, Nottinghamshire Police said on Sunday.

The burglaries took place on Wednesday at the University of Nottingham’s largest campus, situated 650 metres from the hospital.

Mr Lancaster is also charged with a further count of theft and obstructing a police officer.

There were multiple reports of NHS medics having their bicycles stolen on Thursday.

David Hicks wrote on Twitter that his wife, Karen Grace, had been “caring for three coronavirus patients on their deathbed” when hers was taken from the staff bike store.

Dan Harvey, 44, noticed his was missing upon completing a nine-hour night shift on an intensive care unit at 2am.

Mr Harvey told the BBC he had since been “overwhelmed” with offers from the public – including Olympic gold medallist Chris Boardman – and intends to donate excess bikes to his NHS colleagues.

Mr Moran and Mr Lancaster are in custody and will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
