Two Killed In Cardiff Steelworks Explosion

Two people have died after an explosion at the Celsa steelworks in Cardiff.

Five people were also injured in the blast, which was reported just after 10.30am, at the site in East Moors Road in Splott.

A Celsa Steel UK spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm that two colleagues have passed away and four have sustained minor injuries.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with those affected and their families, who have been informed. Our utmost priority is to support all of those involved."

Four of the injured people were taken at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The fifth person was treated at the scene.

More than two dozen fire engines and ambulances were deployed, along with the air ambulance.

Ian Greenman, from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said it was an "extremely difficult and arduous incident involving an explosion in the basement".

He said crews "worked tirelessly" to put out a fire after the blast.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated.

"As soon as the incident occurred, we immediately implemented our emergency protocols and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the exact causes," said Celsa Steel UK's spokesperson.

"Operations have been suspended and the fire services have confirmed that the mill is safe.

"Safety is our paramount concern at all of our facilities and the wellbeing of our colleagues is our number one priority.

"We wish to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and support."

Cardiff South and Penarth Labour MP Stephen Doughty said the news was a shock to the local community.

"My thoughts are of course with the workers caught up in this incident, and their families, and the emergency services responding at the scene," he said.
