Two people have been taken to hospital after an early morning crash in County Durham.

Police officers and ambulance crews were called to an area of Leadgate after an early morning crash involving two vehicles on Saturday. A road was closed in both directions and Durham Constabulary urged motorists to find alternative routes.

The accident happened near to the Leadgate roundabout shortly before 7.30am. The A692 was closed in both directions and slow traffic built up in the area from Brooms Lane to the A691.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 5.44am this morning to reports of a serious road traffic incident on Pont Lane outside The Jolly Drovers near Consett involving two vehicles. We sent five emergency ambulance crews, our Hazardous Area Response Team, a doctor, a specialist paramedic and a duty officer, along with fire and police colleagues. Two patients were taken to University Hospital North Durham for further treatment."

Durham Constabulary said the road closure would remain in place throughout Saturday. No further details were released.
