Two people taken to hospital after two-vehicle collision closes Washington Highway southbound

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash caused the closure of the Washington Highway southbound.

Emergency services were called to the A182 between the A1231 and Castle Road after a two vehicle collision at around 4.40pm. At the time of writing, the road remains closed southbound for recovery to take place.

One person has been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, while a second has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A182 just after 4.40pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team, two double crewed ambulances and a clinical team leader. One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and a second patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just before 5pm on Tuesday, we received a report of a three-vehicle collision on the A182 Washington Highway, near the Galleries shopping centre.

“Emergency services attended, where it was found two males had sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

“The road was subsequently closed for a short time while the vehicles were recovered.”
