Some regard it as a guilty pleasure, others consider it one of the funniest sitcoms Britain has ever produced, some people just think it’s rubbish – but there are two things no-one can argue with: Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps’ popularity, and the brilliance of its cast.
Thanks to that talent, most of the Two Pints cast have gone on to do exciting stuff, as you’ll discover as we pull up a bar stool and grab a handful of pork scratchings to explain...
Will Mellor - Gaz
Will Mellor’s acting career began in the kids’ hospital drama Children’s Ward, where he appeared as Ben Rowlingson for five episodes. His big break came in UK teen soap Hollyoaks, playing James ‘Jambo’ Bolton for 73 episodes (95 - 98, 2004). He also appeared in Casualty as Jack Vincent for 72 episodes (2001–2003). But he’s probably best known for his ten-year run as Gaz Wilkinson in Two Pints (2001 - 2011), which is also his longest period in a single role.
More recently, Mellor was in the first series fo Broadchurch and has had a recurring role on Paul Abbott’s police procedural No Offence as DC Spike Tanner – he’s still on the show.
He’ll also have a recurring role on Swedish drama Sanctuary, which will be released in 2019.
Natalie Casey - Donna
Like Mellor, Casey was also a Hollyoaks alumni, playing Carol Groves from the first episode of the series, remaining on the show for a further four years (1996 - 2000). Following her time on the show, she had a brief stint a presenter for MTV, and on Big Brother's Little Brother, until she landed Two Pints, staying on the show for a decade.
Her most recent film role came in the 2015 TV movie, The Real Mamils. Casey has since moved into theatre, and was most recently seen in 2017’s production of Stepping Out.
Sheridan Smith - Janet
Sheridan Smith has probably the most successful post-Pints career, winning major awards for her television and theatre work. This year, she was even nominated for a Brit Award for her album Sheridan.
Smith played Janet Keogh on Two Pints for a total of 73 episodes, leaving the series in 2009. Following her time on the show, Smith has appeared in several high-profile series, including the titular turn on one of the best episodes of Inside Number 9, ‘The 12 Days of Christine.’
But her most celebrated screen work came in mini-series drama Mrs Biggs, based on the true story of the wife of the Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs. Smith played Charmian Biggs, for which she won the 2013 BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress.
Smith most recently appeared in Jimmy McGovern and Gillian Juckes’ 90-minute drama Care, in which she plays a woman forced to become a carer for her mother, which broadcast this month and is being acclaimed as her best performance yet.
Kathryn Drysdale - Louise
Kathryn Drysdale played Louise Brooks on Two Pints between 2001 and 2009, finding time to appear in Doctor Who (2006), Vanity Fair (the 2004 movie, not the recent series) and a turn in the St Trinians reboot (2007).
More recently Drysdale popped up in some more huge telly titles – Death in Paradise (2014) and Horrible Histories (2015) – and was most recently seen playing Meghan Markle in Royal-family-mocking sitcom The Windsors.
Ralf Little - Johnny
Ralf Little had appeared in several supporting roles before his big break came in 1998’s The Royle Family. Little played Antony Royle in the BBC sitcom, as pretty much everyone in the UK already knows. His sitcom success continued when he was cast in Two Pints in 2001 as Johnny, staying on the show for five years.
Also in 2001, Little played the young George Harrison in Presence at the Royal Court Theatre, securing an Olivier Award nomination for his performance.
More recently, Little appeared in Doctor Who as Steadfast in the Peter Capaldi episode ‘Smile.’ In 2018, you’ll find him arguing with people on Twitter and providing narration for the TV movie Spying On My Family.
Hayley Bishop - Kelly
Bishop has only a handful of acting credits on her CV – in addition to her recurring role as Kelly on Two Pints (Bishop joined the show in 2004), she also appeared on Doctors (2006), Berry’s Way (2006) and Citizen Khan (2016) – and that’s it!
Lee Oakes - Munch
Lee joined the cast of Two Pints in 2003, staying on the show until 2008 as the fairly gormless Munch. He’s since had recurring roles on a couple of other fairly big British shows (Coronation Street and Emmerdale), in addition to appearing opposite Sir Michael Caine in Harry Brown (2009) and, um, Ant and Dec in Alien Autopsy (2006).
He last appeared onscreen in 2011, playing ‘Stage Door Keeper 2’ in the Eric & Ernie TV biopic.
