Two red flood warnings issued in Dorset as river levels rise

Two flood warnings have been isssued for Dorset, with the Environment Agency warning river levels are rising.

The warnings for the Upper Frome at Maiden Newton and Upper Frome from Maiden Newton to Dorchester were issued in the early hours of the morning.

Flood alerts have also been issued for the Lower Avon and tributaries between Christchurch and Ringwood, and West Dorset rivers and streams.

Flood warning: Upper Frome at Maiden Newton

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "River levels are high and rising on the Upper River Frome at Maiden Newton due to the heavy rainfall tonight (Saturday).

"Flooding is forecast to affect locations on the River Frome in Maiden Newton at Dorchester Road and Frome Lane areas.

"There is also a risk of flooding at Lower Barton Farm in Charminster.

"We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this warning if necessary."

They have advised to not use low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

"People in this area should take action now. We urge all people to take care and not drive through flood water."

Flooding is forecast to affect locations on the River Frome from Maiden Newton to Dorchester.

Areas here are at risk:

  • Higher Frome Vauchurch

  • Frome Vauchurch

  • Cruxton

  • Frampton

  • Grimstone

  • Muckleford

  • Stratton

  • Bradford Peverell

  • Wrackleford

  • Charminster

  • Frome Whitfield

  • Wolfeton

  • Lower Burton

  • Cokers Frome

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

"People in this area should take action now. We urge all people to take care and not drive through flood water."

Flood alert: Lower Avon

A spokesperson for the EA said: "River levels are forecast to rise at the Ringwood Old Cottage river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today.

"We expect flooding to affect tributaries between Ringwood and Christchurch.

"Flood water could be deep and fast flowing, and therefore pose a risk to life.

"Further showery rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours. River levels can rise very quickly in response to heavy rainfall.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."
