Two Red Pandas Debut at Brooklyn's Prospect Park Zoo

Two red panda cubs made their public debut at Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, New York, after being born over the summer, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced November 14.

The male cubs were being cared for by their mother, Willow, in the indoor den where they were born until they were old enough to venture outside, the WCS said.

The WCS said that while red panda cubs are light in color and have a “very soft, plush coat,” their color darkens as they grow older and serves as camouflage in the wild.

WCS has been successful breeding red pandas at the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, and Prospect Park Zoo,” the organization said in a press release emailed to Storyful. “The red pandas at the Prospect Park Zoo, Styan’s red pandas, are a subspecies from the eastern portion of the Himalayan range in China and northern Myanmar,” the WCS added.
