Two rushed to hospital after 'falling through ice' at Bedworth pond while trying to rescue dogs
A man and a woman who were found stranded in a freezing Bedworth pond had been trying to rescue their pet dogs. Both were found submerged in Sidings Pool off Smorrall Lane this morning (January 11).
Onlookers dialled 999 after a man and a woman, who have not been identified, were seen in Sidings Pool. One had ventured onto the ice and fell through, prompting the second to enter the water to help, causing them both to become stranded.
Police, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, and West Midlands Ambulance Service were dispatched to the incident at around 11.45am. Crews used life buoys, life rings, and throw lines to bring the man and woman to safety, Nuneaton Fire Station said.

As the man and woman were submerged in the water for around 20 minutes, they were treated for hypothermia and quickly taken to the hospital, where they remain this afternoon (January 11). Fortunately, the dogs involved in the incident were kept warm at the scene and appeared to be unharmed.
A spokesman for Nuneaton Fire Station said: “Following an urgent call, it initiated a multi-agency response regarding a water rescue at Sidings Pool. Two adults fell into a pond while attempting to rescue their two pet dogs.
“It escalated when one individual ventured onto the ice and fell through, prompting the second adult to enter the water for assistance. As a result, both individuals became stranded and required rescue.
“Firefighters utilised life buoys, life rings, and throw lines to successfully bring both casualties to the bank. Due to their prolonged exposure to sub-zero temperatures, the individuals were treated for hypothermia at the scene by emergency responders. After initial treatment at the scene, both adults were transported to the hospital by West Midlands Ambulance Service personnel for further medical evaluation and care.”
Although both of the people involved were safely rescued, the incident sparked a warning from Nuneaton Fire Station. In a statement shared on Facebook, they said: “It serves as a critical reminder of the risks associated with icy conditions.
”Pet owners are advised to keep pets off icy surfaces, walk them on a leash, and avoid entering the water themselves if their pets get into trouble. Instead, contact emergency services by calling 999.
”Remember that the safety of both pets and owners is paramount, and attempting personal rescue can lead to tragic consequences. We urge all community members to exercise caution during cold weather conditions and to prioritise safety for themselves and their pets.”
