Twycross Zoo has welcomed a brightly coloured monkey as its first arrival of 2025. Zookeepers at the Atherstone-based attraction say they are 'thrilled.'

Although the primate is yet to be named, it is a Coppery Titi Monkey, which is indigenous to South America. Keepers say they have distinctive burnt-red fur and are usually found in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.

Zookeepers will be feeding the infant fruit, leaves, insects, and seeds usually found in South America. Primates form lifelong bonds and live in family groups, with males playing a key role in raising their young.

Currently, the infant is being cared for by its father, who will take on the primary caregiving role until they are around six months old. He will continue this until the young primate can explore its enclosure on its own, Twycross Zoo said.

Primate Curator at Twycross Zoo, Matthew Ford, said: “We are thrilled to welcome a Coppery Titi Monkey born as part of our ongoing conservation efforts.”

Mr Ford added: “At the end of last year, they moved into a newly renovated enclosure designed by our expert team of zookeepers, including climbing structures, natural vegetation, and plenty of opportunities to encourage natural behaviours.”
