Typhoon Koinu Nears Taiwan, Prompts Closure of Schools and Offices

Schools and offices across central and southern Taiwan were scheduled to close on Thursday, October 5, as Typhoon Koinu impacts the country, Taiwanese media reported.

The storm’s strength on Wednesday was equivalent to that of a Category 4 hurricane, according to the Washington Post.

Heavy rain advisories were in effect for parts of Taiwan on Wednesday and numerous flights were cancelled, reports said.

Some areas in southern and eastern Taiwan were under “torrential rain” advisories – a category denoting possible cumulative rainfall of more than 350 millimeters (about 13.8 inches) over 24 hours.

Meteorologists expected the typhoon to make landfall in southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, the Associated Press and AccuWeather reported. Credit: CSU/CIRA & JMA/JAXA via Storyful
