U.S. hospitals strained amid COVID-19 surge

Several states in the U.S. on Thursday reported record single-day increases in COVID-19 infections, further evidence that the pandemic is accelerating anew as cooler weather takes hold in many parts of the country.

In the month of October alone, 28 states have reported their daily record high of COVID-19 cases, and on Thursday, Indiana, North Dakota, Illinois and several other states posted daily records, according to a Reuters analysis.

It comes a day after the number of coronavirus deaths reported across the country reached its highest in two months.

Along with spikes in cases and deaths, the number of COVID-19 patients in U.S. hospitals climbed to a two-month high.

In Wisconsin, a COVID-19 hotspot -- where this week Milwaukee residents waited in a long line of vehicles to get tested -- hospitals are feeling the strain.

"I feel like we are at the limits of overwhelming the health system."

In Madison, Wisconsin, Doctor Alexandra Wick says just weeks ago, she had no patients with COVID-19.

Now, all her patients have the coronavirus, which has claimed over 220,000 lives in the U.S.
