U2 postpone concert for 90 minutes so fans can watch a football match

U2 have proven that they always have their fans’ best interests at heart, postponing their Argentina gig by over an hour so that concert-goers could watch a football match.

Argentina were fighting for a spot at the 2018 Russia World Cup last night [10 October] and needed a win in order to make the play-offs following a disappointing qualifying campaign.

Fans were so on edge about the result of the match that the Irish group pushed their Estadio Unico de La Plata concert back so that it started at 10.20pm instead of the originally planned 9pm so that their fans could enjoy the show without any distractions.

Noel Gallagher, who is supporting U2 on their ‘The Joshua Tree Tour’ tour, performed his full 90 minute slot between 7pm and 8.30pm and then four huge TV screens inside the 53,000-capacity venue aired the all-important football game.

Fortunately, Argentina won the match against Ecuador after star player Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick, leading his country to a 3-1 victory and ensuring that U2’s fans were in a celebratory mood for when the concert finally began.

Before the match, producer Daniel Grinbank told Argentinian paper La Nacion: “Can you imagine what the show’s going to be like if Argentina wins? And if we lose, at least we can get rid of the bitterness with a great show.

“You can’t go wrong.”

U2 will play another show in Argentina tonight before heading to Santiago, Chile at the weekend.

The band’s 51-date tour will finish on October 25 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
