Uber has made a major change to the app - but customers who already have it warn idea is "extremely scary" and "horrible". Uber has rolled out new Uber Teen accounts for children as young as 13, the hail-riding app has confirmed ahead of Christmas.

Uber for Teens is a service that lets young people aged 13-17 ride with Uber, as long as they have their parent or guardian’s permission. After a teen is invited by their guardian to sign up, they can start booking their own trips, the company says.

"I just saw a commercial for “Teen Uber” where the app tells you where your teen is ubering to," one person in the US wrote on November 24. "Why TF are we letting teens take an Uber without an adult???" they added on social media.

'Uber for Teens' is a new tool in the UK that allows children as young as 13 to order rides independently. Uber claims that the tool will 'empower teens' while 'providing parents with peace of mind' - but users have slammed the move.

A second seethed: "The uber teen ads are really depressing to me because why wouldn’t a parent be able to pick their child up from a dentist’s appointment or be there for their teen’s big win?" And a third added: "am i the only one that thinks the whole uber teen thing is extremely scary and dangerous??"

Uber for Teens is only in select cities. It’s available to certain drivers. Look for notifications in your Driver app about availability in your area. On its website, Uber explains: "Ratings not related to your service, like app issues, don’t affect your overall score.

"You can always decline trips without hurting your rating. Canceling a trip for unaccompanied minors won’t impact your rating. Remember to inform the rider if you cancel. Direct communication with guardians is not an option.

"However, they might call you during a trip. Your number remains private."
