Uber has halted tests of its autonomous cars after a pedestrian was killed by one of the self-driving vehicles.

The accident happened last night (March 18) in Tempe, Arizona, where Elaine Herzberg was crossing the road with her bicycle.

Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi tweeted: "Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We're thinking of the victim's family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened."

Mark Mitchell, the Mayor of Tempe, has issued a statement that says: "Tempe Police continue to investigate this accident and I want to respect their process so as not to draw conclusions prematurely.

"When a bicyclist, pedestrian or motorist is killed, it should be an opportunity for Tempe to pause and think about what can be done to make our roadways even safer.

"The city of Tempe has been supportive of autonomous vehicle testing because of the innovation and promise the technology may offer in many areas, including transportation options for disabled residents and seniors.

"Testing must occur safely. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here.

"I support the step that Uber has taken to temporarily suspending testing in Tempe until the event is fully examined and understood. That is a responsible step to take at this time."

Both Uber and Google have had accidents with their self-driving cars beforehand, but that doesn't seem to be stopping companies from trying to make them a reality. Even fast food chain Pizza Hut is getting in on the action with self-driving delivery vans.
