Uefa have closed disciplinary proceedings against Roma after monkey chants allegedly aimed at Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger were heard in their 3-3 Champions League draw at Stamford Bridge in October.

European football's governing body charged the Italian club with racist behaviour after monkey chants were believed to have been directed toward Rudiger, who left Roma for Chelsea in the summer, in the game on 18 October.

Uefa's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body met on Thursday to investigate the charge, but have now decided to close the case against Roma. It is believed the decision was made due to insufficient evidence.

A statement on Uefa's website on Friday read: "The DECB has decided to close the disciplinary proceedings."

Rudiger joined Chelsea from Roma in a £34million deal in July as coach Antonio Conte bolstered his defensive options ahead of the new season.

The Germany international has started eight Premier League games for champions Chelsea while also starting the Blues' 3-0 Champions League loss away to his former side Roma in late October.

He came on as a 77th-minute substitute in the reverse fixture earlier in October, replacing wing-back Davide Zappacosta at Stamford Bridge.
