Ugly Betty: Adorable one-eyed French bulldog seeks new home

A one-eyed French bulldog who loves to collect socks and flip-flops is in need of a loving home.

The RSPCA charity took in Ugly Betty last month, after her owners could no longer care for her.

The eight-year-old pooch has a number of health issues, including the frequent need to go to the toilet.

But the charity hopes her “odd looks” and medical needs won’t put off potential adopters.

The “sweet-natured” pup loves collecting footwear and other household items and nuzzling them in her bed, according to the charity.

Staff at its Essex South, Southend and District branch said they have fallen for the adorable Frenchie, but fear others too readily judge her for her “unusual” appearance.

Ugly Betty was "affectionately named" by her previous owner who brought her to the RSPCA, asking them to help her find a new home.

Animal support worker Kathy Butler said: “French bulldogs are a hugely popular breed at the moment and we were sure that Ugly Betty would be snapped up quickly.

“But we think people may be put off by her unusual looks and her health complications.

“Betty is absolutely adorable and has such a lovely, sweet nature. She’s really chilled out and loves going for a little stroll. Her favourite thing is going for a drive in the car and she also loves to potter around the garden in the sunshine.”

It is understood she was previously used for breeding, but she’s now missing an eye and is suffering from Cushing’s Disease for which she needs ongoing medication and blood checks.

She would be best-suited to an adult-only home or a household with older children, the charity said (PA)

“She’s doing well so far and we believe the medication will work for her but we know this is a big financial commitment for any new owner,” Ms Butler added.

She needs access to the outdoors so she can go to the toilet frequently, but with ongoing treatment the RSPCA hopes she will no longer need to use puppy pads at night.

The charity said it would cover medication costs for Ugly Betty's care for three months and just wants someone to giver her “the life she deserves”.

It added that she would love a canine pal and adult owners to keep her company - but that cats are a no-go.
