UK Cannot 'Betray' Millions Who Signed Anti-Brexit Petition, Says Tusk

Speaking in Strasbourg on March 27, European Council President Donald Tusk said the UK could not “betray” the six million people who had backed a petition to revoke Article 50, the clause in the Lisbon Treaty that triggers an EU withdrawal process.

Tusk added that neither should those who marched for a people’s vote be ignored. Nor, he said, “the increasing majority of people who want to remain in the European Union.” This final remark was met with applause and some heckles.

Tusk called April 12, the Brexit extension date, the “new cliff edge”. He said: “Before that day, the UK still has a choice of a deal, no-deal, a long extension or revoking Article 50.” Credit: European Commission via Storyful
