The number of Covid-19 deaths has increased by 60 per cent in a week across the UK, new figures revealed today.

The coronavirus death toll increased from 474 to 761 in the most recent week, an additional 343 deaths, the Office for National Statistics reported.

But London continued to be sheltered from the worst effects of the second wave of the pandemic, with deaths increasing by nine to 43.

The total for England and Wales was 670, up 232 on last week – and meaning the Covid-19 death toll in these countries has more than doubled in a fortnight.
