According to official figures, 35,341 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Monday - up from 34,796 the day before.

In the 24-hour period up to 9am on Tuesday, 89,784 tests were carried out or dispatched, with a total of 2,412 positive results.

Overall a total of 2,772,552 tests have been carried out, and 248,818 cases have been confirmed positive.

Scotland saw an increase of 29 hospital deaths since yesterday, bringing the total to 2,134.

Separately, figures released by the Office for National Statistics today revealed the 'true' UK death toll for all age groups has passed 44,000.

Of the 174 new deaths announced by NHS England today, 29 occurred on May 18, 67 occurred on May 17, 33 occurred on May 16.

NHS England releases updated figures each day showing the dates of every coronavirus-related death in hospitals in England, often including previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago.
