Boris Johnson has praised the British public after 405,000 people – a group "the size of Coventry" – signed up to support the NHS as volunteers.

The number of eager recruits to the government's "GoodSAM" scheme soared just hours after Matt Hancock called for an "army" of helpers.

It came as Clarence House announced that Prince Charles is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus and displaying "mild symptoms".

The death toll from coronavirus in the UK passed 460 on Wednesday, with 28 more confirmed deaths in England.
