Rishi Sunak has set out plans to taper back the Government's furlough scheme, as he led this afternoon's Downing Street press briefing.

The Chancellor announced that businesses must start contributing towards employees' salaries from August, while the self-employed will be able to apply for a second, and final, income grant.

The news comes as the Prime Minister faces increasing pressure to speed up the test and trace system before Monday, when the biggest relaxation of lockdown restrictions so far will come into force.

Meanwhile, councils in England have continued to resist calls to open schools on June 1, and the official UK Covid-19 death toll rose by 324 overnight to 38,161.
