UK coronavirus LIVE: London lockdown fears as new Covid-19 cases hit record high for second-day running

London has been listed as an area of high concern and put on the national Covid “watch list" after 620 new cases were confirmed in the capital in the last 24 hours.

Council leaders said the decision to place the capital on the watch list – alongside places such as Bolton and Blackburn – was a “stark reminder” of the need for “all Londoners to pull together.

It came as the UK recorded a single-day high for the number of new coronavirus cases , for the second day running . On Friday, it was announced there had been a further 6,874 lab-confirmed cases, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 423,236.

Meanwhile, the newly launched NHS coronavirus app was downloaded more than one million times by Android users by Thursday evening according to the Google Play Store. It is expected the figure will likely be higher when iPhone downloads are included.
