Coronavirus cases have surged by nearly 3,000 in the UK for a second consecutive day, fuelling fears of a fresh wave in the pandemic.

Infections rose by 2,948 overnight, marking a slight drop on yesterday's count of 2,988 – the highest daily increase since May.

It comes as Matt Hancock raised Britain's hopes for a Covid-19 vaccine as he revealed that millions of doses are being manufactured.

The Health Secretary said the UK had already secured "30 million doses" with AstraZeneca and that the country would "most likely" secure a vaccine "in the first few months of next year".

In other developments, five schools have been forced to shut following outbreaks of the virus across the UK, and the England has added seven Greek islands to its travel quarantine list.
