A south London schoolboy has been named as the youngest known person in the UK to have died after contracting coronvirus.

The 13-year-old's devastated family confirmed the news just hours after the national death toll surged by 381 overnight to 1,789.

Describing the sharp rise in deaths as "deeply shocking", Michael Gove also offered more positive news by confirming that the NHS would receive "thousands of new ventilators" next week.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has been urged to provide the families of NHS front line “heroes” with compensation should health service workers die in the fight against Covid-19.
